When the Idea Lab was originally proposed for the basement space in the
Center for Really Neat Research there were some initial doubts. The
building had until recently housed a fraternity and the room that we wished
to convert had been used extensively for parties. It was disgusting, a
layer of old beer made the floor sticky,
the dirt and grim of years clung to the walls and the room exhibited quite
the oppressive feeling.
Originally our use for the room had been storage with a few basic
workstations scattered throughout.
It was an area where we could work with our various technologies
but not one that we wished to show off. Indeed the main impression that
people gathered was that the environment was very
pink (this a result of wall hangings to add some cheer and disguise the
condition of the space).
When it was decided that the room was to be used as an interactive
learning environment into which a variety of different people would be
brought, we set out to make some definite changes. We cleaned, we laid
carpet and began to form the basis of a clean, functional
environment.
It was quickly decided that we didn't want this room to
become a sterile
clinic environment and the possibility of building a rain forest was
discussed and adopted. Over time trees of chicken wire and plaster were
created
throughout the space. Innovative workstations were built, a new lighting
system was implemented and mirrors were hung to open up the environment.
The next step in the project was undertaken by a team of illustration
majors who volunteered their time to heighten the rainforest
environment through the creation of a impressive
mural.
Currently we are undertaking the final stage of development of this space.
Additional workstations and focus areas are being designed for the
remainder of the room and a transition between the forest and a more high
tech space is being worked out.
